This one is a true story.

I was snorkeling 40 feet above a magnificent living coral reef in the crystal clear waters of Moal Boal, on the southern coast of Cebu Island — one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Without warning, a tiger shark grabbed me by the ankle.

He dove hard and fast toward the coral reef, bouncing me violently against it as I fought with everything I had. I got a finger into his eye. He let go just long enough for me to break free and will myself to the surface — hearing shouts in German from a tourist boat overhead as I swam for shore like my life depended on it.

Because it did.

My flipper had saved me from the worst of the bite. But six hours later I spiked a 106° fever — a raging blood infection from aspirating seawater. Six Filipinos loaded me into the back of an old Chevy van and raced me three hours along narrow rain-slick mountain roads to the nearest hospital in Cebu City.

They wouldn't let me in until I paid in advance.

A couple of days in intensive care later, I was stable enough to return to Club Serena to finish recovering.

I don't blame the shark. I was in his living room without a proper invitation.
