This one is a true story.

My Filipina fiancée invited me to meet her parents on her father's sugar cane farm high in the mountains of Negros Occidental — harvest day, party time, karaoke machine ready.

Just before my turn at the mic, one of the elders quietly warned me: Abu Sayyaf rebels were moving through the sugar cane field, heading toward the food. And if they spotted me — the big American — they'd likely take me.

I turned my back. I picked up the microphone. I sang "One in a Million."

Then I turned around and sang like I was singing to the whole world.

When the song ended — everybody cheered. Everybody clapped.

Including the rebels.

The elders brought them plates of food, and told them I was a good man. That I was family. And that I should not be harmed.

That night I slept on a bare wooden bed in one of the tiki huts — no mattress, just a sheet on the wood.

I survived the rebels. I survived the bed.
